We hadnât made it far before the alarms started wailing behind us, letting all of the Revolutionary War know weâd left and taken supplies too.
We only stopped to exchange Cloudâs pack for Ly. He put her on his back, and I put his backpack on mine as we broke into a sprint. I was in front, and very unclear of what direction south was, especially in the dark. I just ran like mad for safety, which presented another dilemma because I didnât know where safety was. All I could do was run away from the danger chasing us down. Run away from the regret thatâd already begun to eat away at me.
A bullet zipped by, and I cowered but kept running. Staying low, I made my way across the street to a thicket. Pointy branches crashed into me at every angle, but I couldnât stop because I knew Rogue wouldnât. Jumping over logs, crushing dead leaves beneath our feet, we made a break for the light peeking through the bushes.
Rushing out to the other side, I came to a halt, only to have Claudius trip into me and send me falling flat into the street.
âWatch it!â a man honked his horn at me and swerved as I tried to back out of the street.
âChem!â Cloud cried. He darted out and pulled me to my feet, never missing a step. Together, we dashed back to the sidewalk, blinking around at the city right in front of us. Cars drove on the street, there were streetlights regulating traffic. There were even city lights. It wasnât dark like it had been everywhere else for so long. People stared at us as they passed by. Some wore coats like they were ready for winter, others had on light fall jackets.
âWhere are we?â I asked breathlessly.
âI have no idea,â Claudius said. âJust duck your head and keep moving.â
I nodded, feeling his hand slip into mine as we started down the street. We walked slowly, trying not to cause any more of a stir than we already had. Lyla was looking all around, eyes as big as the moon. It felt like we stepped into a different world, like the rapture and the wrongs had never made it here.
âThereâs an officer, three oâclock, ten feet away. Donât look, just keep walking.â Cloudâs voice was low and stern as we walked, but unfortunately, we didnât look comfy and clean like the rest of this place did. We were in ragged clothes, busted shoes, and we carried big black backpacks full of supplies. We looked like weâd been living in the worst conditions life could throw at us. Sadly, the war camp had been one of the best and most stable places weâd been to so far.
âClaudius, heâs looking this way.â
âJust ignore him and keepââ
âHey! Where do you think youâre going?â
âRun!â Claudius shouted and we took off.
Like a bullet train from the station, we raced beside each other. I saw Cloud rip Lyla off her feet, and she began to cry loudly.
